Flatworms: Reproduction


Two marine flatworms jab each other to inject sperm. The one that gets injected becomes the female and nourishes the developing fertilized eggs.

Flatworms are hermaphroditic.
Individuals fight to be the male and inject sperm. The one that receives the sperm, serves as a female as her eggs get fertilized.

Being hermaphroditic is advantageous if you don’t encounter others of your own kind very often. Each encounter can end in successful reproduction.
